TCR’s Center for Advanced Research on Educational Assessment Technologies, in collaboration with Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) High School presented an invited paper on “Others may see someone eating a cookie — I see the start of a protein kinase cascade reaction”

This paper shares the authors’ experiences in Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) from our respective vantage points as student, educator, researcher, and industry professional. We share a passion for STEM subject matter, and a desire to encourage others to explore it as a way of enriching one’s life and society as a whole.

Abstract – In this paper, we explore influences that hinder and promote interest in STEM, and resulting implications on what is needed to engage and retain students’ life-long interest. The importance of soft skills in developing STEM proficiency is also discussed.

Dr. Teresa Piliouras

Dr. Teresa Piliouras is the CEO and Founder of Technical Consulting & Research, Inc. She is an educator, industry consultant, and entrepreneur with over twenty years of management leadership and technical experience providing Information Technology solutions to corporations, academic, government, and not-for-profit institutions.She was an Adjunct Professor at New York University Polytechnic School of Engineering in Computer Science and Management of Technology, and held visiting appointments as Computer Science Professor at Iona College. She is an award-winning inventor, author of textbooks and peer-reviewed academic publications, and a frequent speaker at industry events. She holds a B.S. from the University of Illinois, a MBA from Iona College, and a Ph.D. from New York University Tandon School of Engineering.

Best We Can Be is an amazing program. I have learned so much since I found out about it in the beginning of freshman year in high school. The great thing about it is that it doesn’t only focus on one or two subjects. It can be about a variety of things, which makes it more interesting. Time management is a problem for many students and is the root cause of many academic problems. Students who wait until the night before an exam to start studying don’t learn or retain information as well as students who plan ahead. This time management program really makes sense to me. At last, high school students have an alternative to quiet desperation. Best We Can Be Time Management series is a great program! I highly recommend it.
